Growing up on Cinnabar Island, Bernie figured she'd spend her life there. Then after a moment with her Growlithe, she decided she wanted to travel the world catching canine Pokemon, along with her trusty Growlithe.
Cinnabar Island could be a lonely place for a girl Bernadetta's age. There weren't many kids around: most of the populace were scientists studying the mysteries of the Pokémon world. That was what her parents did, leaving her alone for long periods of time. The only true companion she had was a Growlithe, which she had received as a present one birthday. She was happy to have her very own Pokémon, especially one that was a fire type. It felt like he represented her hometown, even if it was a lonely hometown.
